What is dental cap/crown?
A dental cap/crown is a restoration which restores the size,shape, function of tooth and protects it from further damage.
When does someone need a dental Crown or cap?
A dental crown is required in following conditions.
1. After root canal treatment in tooth.
2. Tooth with large filling.
3. For replacement of missing tooth.
4. For aesthetic correction by levelling size ,shape and shade of teeth.
5. Cracked tooth.
6. To align the bite.
7. In dental implants.
What are different types of crown/cap?
Broadly they are of two types
1. Metal free which includes Zirconia and E Max Crowns.
2. Metal containing whic includes Porcelain fused to metal (PFM) crowns and pure metal crowns.
Zirconia Crowns
1. Zirconia crowns are quite strong.
2. Translucent Zirconia crowns are also available so they match the shade/color of natural teeth closely.
3. They have strength of metal and aesthetics (looks) of porcelain crown.
4. They are durable and long lasting
5. As they have good strength hence less tooth preparation is required as compare to Porcelain Fused to Metal (PFM) crown, so more of natural tooth structure is preserved.
6. They don’t show black color around the gumline like Porcelain Fused to Metal Crown.
E Max crown
1. They provide excellent esthetics as they are highly translucent.
2. As they are metal free so no allergic reactions to meta happens.
3. They don’t show black color around the gumline like Porcelain Fused to Metal Crown
4. Durable and long lasting.
Porcelain Fused to Metal Crown
This is the conventional crown having metal substructure over which layering of porcelain is done. Metal structure provides strength and porcelain material provides aesthetics/look of natural tooth as it resembles natural tooth in shade.
1. This type of crown has good strength.
2. Aesthetic property is adequate and not as aesthetic as zirconia or E max crown.
3. Lasts longer.
